Itinerary

This is a typical ride day. We leave Kathmandu after breakfast to Arughat via the beautiful local community and zigzag road for around 6 hours. Our final destination for today is Sotikhola, which is 2 hours away from Arughat by bus.

The trek finally starts with easy walking on the route of MachhaKhola (Fish River). The pleasant scenery, waterfalls, and euphony on the jungle incite the hike.

The hot spring(Tatopani) on the way is the center of attraction for this day. After passing Kholabasi, we pass by Tatopani and follow the timbered area towards Dovan. The Budigandaki River underneath Dovan holds its beauty to the next level. As we headed towards Jagat, the altitude level also starts increasing.

Today we have to pass numerous small rivers through suspension bridge. Quite a few small waterfalls give us company as we steadily make our way up the trail towards Philim, which is the small town cover by the Gurung community. On our way to Lokpa from Philim, The beauty of Ganesh Himal attracts our attention throughout the journey.

Lush greenery and cultivated fields escort us towards an occult Buddhist village. Our hike to Chumling is fairly relaxing. Again Ganesh Himal serves as a backdrop for this day as we continue going up along the shair Khola followed by a small Tibetan monastery.

After 20 minutes walk from Chhule, we will get at the Nile, which is the western side of Shair Khola. One of the most sacred caves “Pire Phu” (Pigeon Cave) is on our way in the Tshun Valley. We make our way following the ancient trade route to Tibet. Chortens, stupas, mani walls, monasteries, and nunneries are the famous village on our way, which all reminds of the rugged cultural and historical bond with the North’s people. Before Mu Gompa, we will see Milarepa Cave where we can have a small break to inspect its beauty.

From Mu Gompa, we take the trail to Chhokangparo, a nunnery. The nunnery is located in the Shiar Khola Valley in the bottoms of the mountains adjoining Nepal and Tibet. The largest nunneries in the Tsum valley is the Rachen Gumba, which is established in 1905AD.

We walk to Chumling through a narrow and difficult trail and continue to Lokpa through dense pine and rhododendron forests.

Our trek commences with crossing the Budi Gandaki river and climb up followed by a waterfall. We keep climbing until Shringi Khole, after crossing Shringi Khola we reach Ghap.

On our way to lho we first have to cross Budi Gandaki River through a small wooden bridge and then following the path lined with scattered houses with cultivated fields. After climbing a big rock and passes through a deep rhododendron forest we reach Namrung. After Namrung, we follow the Hinan River from Linda Glacier to Sho. Naike peak, Manaslu north (7,774m), and Manaslu (8,150m) are visible from Sho.

You will pass the stone gate and long Mani stone wall of the village after Lho with a full view of Peak 29 ahead. You can make a side excursion to Pungen Glacier from here to get a very close-up view of Manaslu. Follow the lateral moraine of Pungen Glacier toward Sama. From the village of Sama, it takes another 20 minutes to reach Sama Gompa for night halt.

We have altitude acclimatization day to avoid Altitude Mountain sickness (AMS). During this day you can utilize your free day roaming around Birendra lake, Pungeen Gompa or the local community.

Our trail goes gradually up to the valley passing the grazing areas. On our way to Samdo, we have an awe-inspiring view of Manasalu. Samdo is the last permanent settlement in the valley and is only a day's walk from the Tibetan border. After reaching Samdo, we will have time to explore this village.

Our trek forwarded to Larkya La from the beginning of the day. We need to climb the hill for a couple of hours to reach the Dharmasala at 4200 m, which is the last campsite before the pass.

Today, we have a very early breakfast and start instantly. The trail reaches at the top of the moraine at 4,700m. (15,420ft) and climbs steeply to the pass. The trail then descends to Bimtang. This gigantic valley is surrounded by high peaks.

As we descend from Bhimthang through yak pastures to the first signs of the Dudh Khola’s water, Manaslu stands on our left and Annapurna Range on right. After crossing the bridge, our path gradually leaves behind the alpine climate and takes us down through rhododendron forest to a slender valley of attached fields. Tilje is a small village on our way back to Dharapani.

A long day's driving by local transport to either Pokhara or Kathmandu.
